Is Your Downspout Suitable? PDF Print E-mail

Step One: Observe Your Site

Use this easy checklist to see if one or more downspouts on your property are good candidates for disconnection. You want to make sure that water infiltrates into the ground in such a way that it will not damage your foundation.

To get started, all you need is a tape slope visualmeasure and a level:

□    Does the ground gently slope away from the house or garage? (The slope should not be greater than 10%  -- otherwise the water could cause erosion. Don't have a level? Use the handy graph at left to help visualize the degree of slope in your yard.)

□    Will the downspout discharge at least five feet away from a basement, or three feet away from a building without a basement?

□    Is your property line at least ten feet away from the point of discharge?

□    Will the discharge point be at least five feet away from the public sidewalk?

□    Will the discharge point be at least five feet away from a retaining wall or garage?

If the answer to each question is "Yes”, your downspout is ready for disconnection!
