The Colors of Rock Creek

A Studio Celebration of Sam Gilliam’s “Carousel”

Experience a pivotal moment in art history in its most intimate form. This May, Rock Creek Conservancy is offering a rare, private viewing of Sam Gilliam’s masterpiece, Carousel (1969) within the famed artist’s own Washington, D.C. studio.

This rare, invitation-only event offers a front-row seat to the revolutionary “drape” technique that redefined American abstract art. Witness the immersive, 67-foot long, colorful suspended canvas where Gilliam created many masterpieces.

The afternoon event is elevated by a personal tour from Annie Gawlak, Gilliam’s wife and a partner in his creative process. This is a unique opportunity to discover the critical role of Rock Creek in shaping a giant in contemporary art.

Ticket sale proceeds will help Rock Creek Conservancy to advance its restoration of the park’s forests, engage community volunteers, and connect youth to nature.
