Best Running Routes in Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park offers a mix of paved, scenic trails and car-free sections that make it one of DC’s top running destinations. Here are some of the best routes for different fitness levels and preferences.

Tips for Running in Rock Creek Park

  • Best times: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and crowds.

  • Footwear: Sturdy shoes for trails; comfortable running shoes for paved sections.

  • Navigation: Download maps in advance, as some trails are not well marked.

  • Wildlife: Be alert for a variety of animals, especially in wooded areas.

Valley Trail

The Valley Trail is one of two major trails in Rock Creek Park. The trail is a narrow trail for a majority of its length and is generally considered a trail appropriate for foot traffic only. There is a slight uphill hike in the beginning, followed by a rocky path. Follow the blue markers to stay on track.

If you find yourself at the north end of the park on the DC/MD line, you can start in Meadowbrook Park in MD and connect with the Valley Trail on the DC side in Rock Creek Park.

Western Ridge Trail

The Western Ridge Trail runs along the western border of Rock Creek Park from north to south. The trail also runs from Boundary Bridge at the border between the District of Columbia and Maryland south to Bluff Bridge. The trail is marked with light green markings

The rock scrambles and great scenery of the Western Ridge Trail are absolutely beautiful.

A recommended route begins on the Western Ridge Trail, descends toward the Valley Trail, and then loops back, allowing you to experience multiple elevations and plant communities in a single outing.
